Though I have never been in a significant automobile collision, I have been in one that could have been serious had things been just a little bit different. I consider myself fortunate, and I hope this is nothing that I ever need to go through, and I hope nobody in my family has that kind of bad luck either. No one wants to go through an automobile accident; you have to know it is a possibility. I stress about them the most in winter. We live in a place where everyone thinks they can manage the snow, and they go racing through it like they were indestructible. They are frequently proven wrong.
It seemed there was a rash of crashes when I was a teen-ager. It may have been that people didn't have a lot of money and bought mostly used cars - and while used cars can be utterly safe, purchasing used cars will never be altogether as dependable as purchasing new cars. I lived in a really small town, and our graduating classes averaged less than a hundred pupils each year. Everybody pretty much knew everyone else, and this wasn't just restricted to those in your class. It seemed that each year there was at the least one deadly automobile accident, and it was always lethal. The saddest part was that each automobile collision seemed to be related to drinking. There was nothing else to do in our community, so everybody drank. A lot of people in my school died because of it.
I can't say I was any better. Although I didn't drive, I did ride along with people who had done so. I was not what you would call a thick person either. Teenagers know the risks of an automobile accident but they just don't believe it can happen to them. I just never thought I was at risk, and I was blessed that the only automobile accident I was in was very minor, and equally fortunate in that no-one got hurt. Icy roads were to blame for that collision, and thankfully nobody had been drinking.
If you stress out about your kids being involved in an automobile accident, you have a right to worry. The smartest teens on the planet make some poor alternatives. That is all a part of growing up. You have to warn them of the risks of drinking and being in a car, and you need to let them know that an automobile collision can happen at any time. This might not be enough though, and that means you have to make sure you know where your kids are and what they are doing all the time. This might mean making them stay home when their buddies are out. They may say they hate you for it, but it's all part of being a great parent. Personally, I would prefer a mad kid to a dead child.
