Then I saw an online advertisement for a site that sells complete books on cd, and I clicked through to check it out. They offered a free trial download, which I took advantage of. I loved it! Rather than having to find additional time to read, I could now just listen to a book while commuting to and from work.
After that first trial, I started looking at ways to get more unabridged audio books on CD. Becoming a full member at a site like Audible.com is one option, but I did not wish to lock myself in to paying $15 or more each month for audio books on CD. For those who can afford it, Audible is an outstanding choice. They have a gigantic selection of unabridged audio books on CD, including a large number of new releases from the most popular writers around. The interface for downloading looks to be easy enough to use, and the files are able to be played on any digital music competitor available to buy. But like I said, I did not want to pay for a membership, so I kept looking.
I then found a web page called Libras that offers free unabridged books on tape that anyone can get without paying a dime. The catch is that they only deal with magazines that are in the public domain (meaning titles which are more than 75 years of age) and the works are read by volunteers. If you like reading classics and do not mind the wildly varying degree of competence among the volunteers, then this would be a good alternative to joining a pay-to-listen program.
The best source of free full-length audio books turned out to be my local public library. My valid membership card allows me to "borrow" complete books on tape for either two or three weeks, after which time the files expire and can no longer be played. Two to three weeks is a good deal of time to get through a single book, so I have never had a problem with the time limit. Also, I don't mind that I can not use the files ever again after the lending period expires. It is not as though there are many titles out there that I would listen to over and over again.
Now that I'm getting free whole books on tape from my library, my daily commute has become more enjoyable and productive than ever. I really like being able to simply sit there and be entertained by listening to a good story as I drive.
