Everyone can benefit from stress reduction treatments, that can be exercised anywhere at anytime. How we handle stress is a sign of how happy and healthy we are. We have been researching the effects of music on healing, relaxation and alleviating stress. It's been a fun and rewarding journey of discovery, and to observe National Stress Awareness Month, I am glad to share some of our findings here with you.
Music eases the savage beast in all of us to help stress reduction and relaxation. On its own, Music can help center and cool us. We can use high-energy rhythmic music with a beat (like Spa Rhythms) to get us moving and dancing. Shaking our body and releasing pent up energy can be a very effective stress release. And there is the slow paced, soothing music which calms us down (such as Spa Dreams), and helps entrain our body to a more peaceful, harmonic state. Of the numerous tools that help us handle stress, music complements them all. Mind-body strategies such as yoga, meditation, toning, mantra, chanting, guided imagery, and visualization are all enhanced by the presence of appropriate music. These are all vital elements of an effective wellness solutions program.
Try developing your own music for highest benefit from your own efforts, while realizing that nothing ventured is nothing gained. Music can be enjoyed and beneficial in either live or recorded forms and it is particularly beneficial when self-created. By that, I mean you are creating the music yourself, either with instruments or with your voice. At this point, many of you can say '"Oh, I can't sing, I don't play an instrument." But everyone has a voice and everyone can tap two sticks together and make a rhythm. Singing in the shower or in the car can actually release endorphins in your brain that boost your mood and make you content. Singing can literally change your emotional state.
Remember the song "Whenever I feel afraid, I whistle a happy tune and no-one ever knows I'm afraid." Try singing when driving down the road alone in your car. Take a walk in nature. Sing a song that lifts your mind. Make up a song expressing how you feel. No matter what it sounds like. Let it out. Create long tones of ah or oh and push that sound out with your breath. This is a process called toning and it is incredibly relaxing and good for our whole bodies.
This may seem like summer camp, but when I am truly stressed, sometimes putting on nice music and dancing around the room can release the energies of strains that may have been eating away at me. Anything that makes you breathing is going to help ease your stress. Conscious breathing exercises are one thing, but dancing and moving and huffing and puffing may be more enjoyable and can do the same thing. Try and create a lifestyle allowing relaxation with home spa products.
Laughter along with music has been proven to be the best anti-stress therapy and come at any time. Here's something we realized when we were researching for our speeches on music and healing at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. A certain retired Air Force Colonel was working for the Pentagon doing workshops with military families who were having the stress of multiple deployments or losses in war. He taught them to laugh. He made them laugh when they didn't even feel like laughing. The physical effect of laughing was able to stimulate them to actually start feeling good again. Laughter was an essential tool to lift their spirits.
